Martinsville, Indiana is the county seat of Morgan County. The city is located 30 miles south of Indianapolis and 20 miles north of Bloomington between Indiana State Roads 67 and 37. Martinsville reported a population 11,932 during the 2020 United States Census. Founded in 1822, the city wasn't officially incorporated until 1863, when public mandate won the residents the right to pass ordinances and elect officials.
The Martinsville School District consists of an early childhood center, two elementary schools, a middle school and Martinsville High School, home of the Artesians. The city and its school district are also partners with the Piedmont Governor's School (PGS) for Mathematics, Science and Technology. An Academic-Year school, PGS offers its students the opportunity to earn an Associate's Degree from their local community college.
Martinsville offers its residents a quiet and peaceful place to make their homes. There is a park and pool in the city as well as an art gallery and a movie theater. There are multiple restaurant franchises in the area, offering an array of fast food and sit down dining options as well as a number of well known local eateries, such as Bynam's Steak House. Other attractions include those held at the Public Library and the County Fairgrounds offering a variety of locally flavored entertainment throughout the year.
Martinsville has been home to a multitude of different businesses throughout the years. From spas focusing on the natural artesian wells in the area to meat processing and logging, the area has shown that its residents are capable of more than commuting. One example of this are the local fisheries. The Martinsville goldfish industry was started as an experiment in aquaculture in 1899. Once known as the "Goldfish Capitol of the World", the area is still home to a number of international fisheries.
Martinsville is a small mid-west town with a distinct personality. Located within easy driving distance of both Bloomington and Indianapolis, Martinsville offers you a chance to develop your own uniqueness outside the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
