The city of Franklin is located in Johnson County, Indiana. Approximately 20 miles south of Indianapolis, Franklin has a population of 25,313 reported in the 2020 United States Census. The city is the county seat of Johnson County and the home of Franklin College. It occupies a total area of 11.3 square miles and has an average population density of just over 1,800 people per square mile.
Franklin is known for its steady and dependable economy. Thanks to its prime location between US 31 and I‑65, the city has managed to attract a number of solid international companies. A few of these notable businesses who have set up operations in Franklin include NSK, Mitsubishi, and Toyota. The city is also the home of the first Ritter's Frozen Custard. However, due to its easy access to Indianapolis, Franklin is also a thriving community for commuters who are looking for a quiet lifestyle outside of the city.
The city is known for its historic background. Franklin was founded in the early 1800's and named after Benjamin Franklin. The Masonic Temple was built around 1924 and is the current site of the Johnson County Museum of History. The August Zeppenfeld House has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and the county court house was constructed in 1879.
The community has also shown its dedication to its young people throughout its history. Franklin College was founded in 1834 and currently offers its students opportunities in 30 different majors. The Franklin Community School Corporation is home to five elementary schools, one intermediate school, one middle school and Franklin High School, home of the Grizzly Cubs.
If you have more of an interest in recreation, then Franklin is still the place to be. The city is home to several parks, including over 50 acres in the Province Park. The city's down town area is filled with shops, restaurants, and coffeehouses. It is also home to the historic Artcraft Theater.
